Koala's are SO cute... even when they poop on you...

Walking into Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, I thought to myself, "Man, today is a great day to cuddle a koala!"  I rapidly walked past the paddy-melons (cute little animals that literally look like a melon with arms, legs and a head), barely taking notice at the various birds, wombats, dingoes, and other amazing Australian creatures that make up this sanctuary.  I didn't really even take heed when my boyfriend called out to me, "Hey lady, slow down!" as I left him in the dust of my tracks.  All I knew was that a koala was waiting to be cuddled by me somewhere inside this sanctuary and I would not rest until I found him/her. My boyfriend and I decided to make this one of our stops during our week-long stay in Queensland for a few reasons:
  • It is one of the only places in Australia, and one of the few places in the world, where a person can physically hold a koala.
  • There are so many other animals to observe and learn about without the hassle of a crowded zoo, with people all fighting to get in the front for the perfect picture.
  • Lone Pine Sanctuary is truly a special place where you can tell that everyone who works there genuinely cares about these animals and their well-being.
We finally made it to the cuddling area and there was a pretty little koala being held by another customer.  My heart melted instantly. It was so dang cute!  And as my turn approached, and I eagerly extended my arms, they took the koala away!  What?! But before I was able to try to steal the koala and run the keeper explained they switch out the koalas every 30 minutes because they begin to get tired and cranky.  So, as promised, my koala showed up.  Her name was Saffron and I loved her.  We had a moment of bonding as my boyfriend snapped away with the camera.  And then it happened... She pooped on me.  Apparently I had mistaken what I thought was bonding with what was actually Saffron expressing how much she wished she was still lounging in her tree taking one of her 15 naps for the day.  But regardless of Saffron’s interpretation of the whole experience, I loved it, and will always fondly remember... to never wear my pink scooped neck t-shirt again.

We can help you experience the joy of cuddling a cute koala, too.  Just don’t wear your favorite t-shirt!
