The Aussie Workout - Surfing at Bondi Beach

The entire seven days and six nights I was in Sydney, it rained, which is very uncharacteristic for this beautiful city.  However,my boyfriend and I made the best of it by visiting numerous restaurants, shops, and our hotel bar.  However, on one of our last days in Sydney the clouds parted and allowed sunshine to flood the city, parks and beaches just in time for our morning surfing lesson at the world-famous BondiBeach

As I approached the intimate beach and scanned the beautiful panoramic scenery, I noticed there was only one thing missing:  Australian hottie Hugh Jackman! After I got over my 10-second depression of not being able to share a beach with that beautiful man,I found the surfing company called 'Let's Go Surfing!'

My instructor was a tall, lean Australian who had already gotten in his morning leisure surf.  We jumped into our wetsuits and got started. Our instructor was incredibly patient with all of us and started off with the basics.  After doing a few stretches and applying layers of SPF 5000, we learned all of the steps to surfing right there on the sand.  We fake paddled with our arms, learned where and how to stand on the board, and how to center our balance while riding the wave.

And just when he had us thinking this was going to be apiece of cake, we entered the water.  Boys and girls, make sure you eat your Wheaties in the morning before surf school because this is truly a strenuous workout that requires you to use every muscle in your body. After quite a few nose dives and face plants I started to get the hang of it! Finally, I stood up on the board and rode a wave into the shore. For those six seconds I felt a great sense of accomplishment!  Now I am not claiming to be an expert surfer by any means, but I definitely would not have gotten as far as I did without the help of the surf school.  It was such a cool experience, and for a moment, I felt like I could have been mistaken for a native Australian.

I sincerely feel that every person traveling to this part of the world should check out this tradition and

experience one of Australia’s favorite pastimes. After all, when in Rome...
